Meerkats are extremely social animals whilst also being incredibly inquisitive which means that they are great for animal encounters. We know this from many years of running this same experience at Wingham Wildlife Park.
What is a meerkat experience?
You will meet one of our keepers who will walk you through our tropical house until you get to our meerkat enclosure (this experience is done indoors), where they will tell you a little more about what is going to happen and go through some health and safety about the experience.
You will then enter the enclosure with our keeper to meet our mob of meerkats up close and personal.
Once you take a seat in the enclosure we will place a towel over your lap which we sprinkle mealworms on to. It is then only a matter of time before the meerkats also climb on your lap for a tasty wriggly treat. Once they settle in you will be able to gently stroke the meerkats who come and see you.
The time in the enclosure with the meerkats will be around 15 minutes – after this they usually gets bored of new people, and as soon as they are finished, or they don’t want to do the encounter it is time to say good bye to your new furry friends – our animals never have to do anything they don’t wish to and we can never guarantee a set amount or level of contact.
Are there any meerkat experience restrictions?
Meerkats are a very active species which likes to dig in sand. As such the enclosure needs to be designed in a way which facilitates this, and as a result the enclosure does have a very uneven ground with soft sand as a substrate making it unsuitable for wheelchair access. There is also a step up in to the enclosure.
The minimum age for this experience is 4 years.
What’s included in the meerkat experience price?
When purchasing an experience ticket this fee will cover that one person doing the experience to participate. You will be met by one of our keepers . Including the experience and health & safety briefing, please expect to be at the park for 30 minutes, however the experience also includes entry to the park for you and one accompanying person as a spectator to ensure that they can get some nice photos of you during the experience. If you wish to have any further spectators these can be purchased with normal day entry tickets at the same time slot as you. Please note that the ability to walk around the park is only available for tickets booked for the 12th October or later which is when the park will open to the public. Until then participants and spectators will not be free to wander around the park and to reflect this any additional spectators until the 12th October will be charged at £5.
How much does the meerkat experience cost?
The meerkat experience costs £60 per person including 1 free spectator.
We can however cater for 2 people to do the experience at a time in which case the price drops to £50 per person (£100 in total), but this time without any free spectators. Please note that in order to enter the park unattended participants need to be a minimum age of 16 years. If the participants is under 16 they must use their one free spectator ticket for someone aged over 16, and if the experience is for 2 people aged under 16, the accompanying adult(s) must purchase a spectator ticket (as these are not included with the discounted multi-buy).
