What is a tamandua experience?
You will meet one of our keepers who will walk you through our tropical house until you get to our indoor tamandua enclosure, where they will tell you a little more about what is going to happen and go through some health and safety about the experience.
You will then accompany our keeper to meet our tamandua up close and personal as he comes out to meet you.
As he likes to have a wander and explore we will get you seated in front of his enclosure (which he shares with our sloth) and bring him out to see you. First he will sit on you while you let him feed on some insects out of a bowl. Once he has filled up a little he will want to burn off some calories so we will let him wander out at your feet, after which he will finish his insects, this time with you feeding him by hand.
The time with the tamandua will be around 15 minutes – after this he usually gets bored of new people, and as soon as he is finished, or he no longer wants to do the encounter it is time to say good bye to your new furry friend – our animals never have to do anything they don’t wish to and we can never guarantee a set amount or level of contact.
Are there any tamandua experience restrictions?
Tamanduas are a very active species who love to climb and dig around at ground level, however he comes out of the enclosure to see you which makes this experience suitable for wheelchair users.
